Independence Heights is located at the northwest corner at I-45 North and the 610 Loop. The area has a rich history of several generations of African Americans who established the community's homes, businesses and churches. In the 1970s, the community began changing when more affluent families took advantage of HISD's desegregation and moved away.

Today the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council (IHRC) and its partners are working to preserve the historical and cultural aspects of the community. They are spearheading various revitalization projects. Catholic Charities CDC recognizes and works with the IHRC to help redevelopment this historical community.

The IHRC objective is to improve the quality of life for residents and build up the neighborhood. They will focus on building wealth and enhancing the spiritual, physical, economic and social well being of the residents of Independence Heights.
